Skynyrd Facts

On the airplane Skynyrd was on when they crashed, Gary Rossington was sitting in the middle of Ronnie and Dean Kilpatrick. Leon Wilkeson was sitting in between Steve and Cassie Gaines.

Allman Brothers Band guitarist Duane Allman died around the same time that "Freebird" was released. Skynyrd would dedicate it to Duane at concerts.

Ronnie Van Zant wrote most of their lyrics, but usually didn't write them down. He would come to the studio with them in his head.

Rossington, Burns and Ronnie Van Zant met at a Little League game. Van Zant hit a line drive off Burns' head, but after the game they got together and formed a band.

Skynyrd releases their third album, 'Nuthin Fancy,' in 1975, and it goes gold. The single from the album is 'Saturday Night Special.' 'Freebird' is re-released as a single, and receives notable national airplay, reaching the top 20 in the charts. The band embarks on 'The Torture Tour.' Bob Burns leaves the band. Ed King also leaves the band. Artimus Pyle joins the band as their new drummer. The Honkettes, comprised of Leslie Hawkins, JoJo Billingsley and Cassie Gaines become a part of the band as Back-up singers.

In September of 1976, Gary Rossington was injured in a car accident in Jacksonville, which inspires the song 'That Smell.' Steve Gaines joins the band as their third guitarist.

Producer and Blood, Sweat & Tears keyboardist Al Kooper discovered the band in 1972 when they were playing at an Atlanta bar called "Funocchio's." Kooper was looking for bands for MCA's "Sounds of the South" label. After Kooper jammed with them, he signed them for 9,000 Dollars. 

During the sessions for call me the breeze, John Lennon came by the studio to say hello.

Fans started throwing bullets and other objects on stage when they performed "Gimme Back My Bullets". They had to take it out of their set list because they were afraid someone was going to get hurt.
